Rights of Light is a common law matter concerning the right to receive a certain level of natural light through 'defined apertures' (windows).
Many local authorities now require an assessment of the impact of a new building or extension on the natural light received by surrounding properties to be submitted as part of a planning application.
This assessment is usually based on the BRE 'Site layout planning for daylight and sunlight - a guide to good practice' (BRE guidelines).
